Walking in Japan

Updated: Mar 19, 2021

When people learn that I have lived #aloneinJapan (no relatives) for almost 15 years, the number 1 question is always why. Every foreigner has his own reason; maybe mine is a little different.

Living in Japan has allowed me to walk the streets alone without any care in the world. And I have done this here in all places I've been, day or night time.

Back in my hometown, I remember I could walk home from my school, even at night, and it took me about 15 minutes. But I remember I had to be wary of my surroundings and always made sure no one was following me. Paranoid much?! However, that was ages ago! I don't think the teenagers back home now have that luxury.

But here.... Boy oh boy! I never had second thoughts. Yes, people who knew about my midnight walks would always caution me. Often, those heartfelt reminders would land on deaf ears and eager feet.

One last thing, men don't wolf whistle or try to get your attention by calling you names. Some men would holler at any available lady. Most Japanese men I come across during my walks ignore me. And I love them for doing so.

Won't it be great if all have that peace of mind to walk down the streets alone?
