You won't believe the crazy adventure JCB had with his puffer vest recently. Well, he's been training for an upcoming full marathon (April 16). After a long sweaty run, he decided to do laundry and hang up his clothes to dry on the balcony after his long and sweaty run. Little did we know, there was a gale warning that we completely missed.
So, we were going about our day when suddenly we heard a loud thud outside, so I asked JCB to check. Me: Could you please check what fell? (trying to look the other way as he opened the door - I have crazy hay fever symptoms)
JCB: (bringing in some clothes) A pot was just knocked out by the wind. Me: (worrying about losing things)I think you should bring in all the clothes; they might get blown off.
JCB: (shaking his head) Nah! They're not yet dry.
Me: If you say so... After a couple of hours, he went to the balcony to check. And to his horror, JCB's puffer vest was nowhere to be found! In my mind, I was repeating the words, "I told you so! I told you so!". I was so smug then. Ha!
We looked over the balconies of the lower floors and neighboring units, but it was nowhere in sight. It was like the wind had just whisked it away into thin air.
Since we needed to visit the real estate agency anyway, we searched the parking area and nearby locations, hoping to find the vest. But with the wind blowing so fiercely, we assumed it must have been carried far away. We felt bummed out about the lost vest.
But then, as JCB went to check the mailboxes (his routine), he carried a big, white paper bag. I was puzzled, thinking it was a random delivery from Amazon that I couldn't remember ordering. But when I saw his big smile as he set it on the table, I couldn't believe my eyes - it was JCB's puffer vest, neatly folded and wrapped in a clear plastic bag, placed inside the paper bag with a note!
We were amazed by the thoughtfulness of our neighbor who had found the vest. The way it was returned was a dead giveaway that it had to be a Japanese neighbor. You see, most foreigners would have simply put the vest in the paper bag, with or without a note. But our neighbor went the extra mile to make sure it was well-protected and presented in a tidy manner.
Now, we want to thank our kind neighbor and show our appreciation. But here's the catch - there was no unit number mentioned in the note, so we have no idea which neighbor it was.
We've been scratching our heads trying to come up with ways to express our gratitude. Maybe we could leave a thank-you note in the mailbox for the mystery neighbor to find? Or perhaps we could bake some homemade cookies and share them with all the neighbors in the building as a gesture of thanks? We're open to suggestions because we really want to show our neighbor how much we appreciate their kindness.
Living in Japan has truly been an eye-opening experience for us in so many ways. The level of consideration and thoughtfulness that the Japanese people show in their everyday actions is truly remarkable. From returning a lost item with meticulous care to going out of their way to help a stranger, it's the little things that make living in Japan different from any other country we've lived in.
So, here's to our mystery neighbor who returned JCB's puffer vest in the most thoughtful and Japanese way possible. We may not know who you are, but your kind act has left a lasting impression on us. ありがとうございます！
